Should I Repair Or Replace My Tires?

When it comes to tires, certain things ring true. For instance, they cannot have any punctures or holes. Why? Well, when they do, depending on the size of the opening, the units will leak air either fast or slow. Also, rubber can dry rot after being exposed to UV rays, rain, snow, and other elements over the years. Air can begin to escape from spots on the sidewalls, near the tread, or anywhere.

If a car tire goes flat continually, it doesn’t do the vehicle’s owner any favors. He or she will have to spend who knows how many quarters each day to keep the appropriate PSI in the wheel. Then again, there is also the option of going out and buying an air compressor, hose, and air chuck. However, why go through all of that trouble? A professional tire technician can inspect wheels and advise the car owner whether they need a repair or replacement.

Examples Of When A Repair Might Be The Perfect Solution

Firstly, if a thorn, small piece of metal, or a sliver of glass punctures a tire, the owner must consider the price. Obviously, if the tire is fairly new and in good shape, he or she probably doesn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a unit if they don’t have to, and who can blame them? In such scenarios, a tire technician can remove the item and plug the hole. Meanwhile, other professionals prefer to break the tire down and install a patch on the inside. Whatever choice the car owner and tech go with, the repair total will be way less than buying a tire.

Is It Better To Have The Tires Replaced?

In some cases, tires are beyond any repair, and they must be replaced. For example, if a front tire busted belt enters the picture, the front end of the vehicle will begin to shake violently. So much so, that in many instances, the driver can no longer safely control the car and has to pull over. Techs cannot repair torn, separated, or ripped belts. Instead, they have to replace the wheel to ensure the car’s occupants and others on the roadways remain safe.

Why is My Diesel Truck Blowing Smoke Out of the Tailpipe?

Diesel Truck Blowing Smoke

Maintenance and care for our vehicles is important to keep them riding for many years. Even though we try, we can’t control everything, so in this article, Callahan Auto & Diesel will assess and address what is happening when smoke is blowing out of our diesel truck tailpipe.

To assess the symptom, we need to know if it’s white, black or blue smoke. This will be obvious to the eye but each is caused by a different issue.

White Smoke

If it’s white smoke, it means that the diesel fuel is not burning correctly. (Be careful as the unburnt diesel has many toxins that can sting the eyes.) This is probably due to lack of heat in the combustion part of the engine and likely caused by one of the following:

  • Injector timing is incorrect
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Water in diesel
  • Worn seals in the engine

To address the problem, you can siphon out the diesel and replace with new diesel and determine if there was water in the diesel. If that doesn’t work, you can change the fuel filter. If it’s not one of these issues, you’ll probably need to take to the car mechanic to check the fuel injectors or engine seals.

Black Smoke

Black smoke means there isn’t enough oxygen mixing with the diesel, so some of the diesel is not burning and being emitted as black soot.

This is likely caused by:

  • Damaged injectors or injector pump
  • Clogged or gummy cylinder head valves
  • Dirty air cleaner

You can address the injector, injector pump, or air cleaner with replacements and if the head valves just need a cleaning. Replacing the head valves will likely need a visit to the local mechanic.

Blue Smoke

If there is blue smoke, it’s usually caused by too much lubricating oil in the engine during combustion and when burnt, it emits as a blue smoke.

This symptom can be used by:

  • Leaking or worn valve stem or turbocharger seals
  • Incorrect type of oil used
  • Excess engine oil in sump
  • Old or worn out engine

Most of these are signs of an aging vehicle and are relatively common; a tune up can help to clear up the blue smoke issue with new seals and other engine parts that degrade over time.

What Does Timing Belt Service Include?

Timing Belt Service

Next time your mechanic tells you that your car’s timing belt needs a replacement and may cost a thousand dollars or more, do not panic. Do not assume that the guy is trying to rip you off.

The timing belt is one of the most crucial parts of your car’s engine. If it fails, so will your engine, leaving your car in the shutdown mode for good. So it is essential to replace it periodically.

You are better off replacing it then and there instead of having it broken on the highway when you are driving at 80 miles per hour. It’s a definite safety issue.

What does the timing belt do?

The timing belt is an integral part of most combustion engines and synchronizes the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft. It causes the valves in the engine open and close at the right times so that the air and fuel flow through the engine.

The valves are opened when the piston sucks the air and fuel inside the chamber. This is called the suction/intake stroke.

The valves are then closed and piston gets the chance to compress the fuel and air (also known as charge). This is the compression stroke.

For gasoline cars, a spark plug ignites the compressed charge creating the explosion and giving the piston its power to push down. The valves are still closed. This is known as the power stroke.

After the power stroke is completed, the valves are opened. The piston again comes up exhausting the burnt charge out of the combustion chamber. This is the exhaust stroke.

The timing belt ensures that the opening and closing of the valves in the combustion chamber take place at the right time and in sync with the camshaft, and the crankshaft; basically the strokes of the engine.

When to replace the timing belt?

Unfortunately, there aren’t clear signs given by the timing belt before its demise. It will just snap off. That’s why most automobile companies suggest that the timing belt should be changed every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Your car’s manual will provide the exact number for your model.

What is included in my timing belt service?

The process of servicing/replacing the timing belt is very tedious and requires the mechanic to first disconnect the battery ground cable. Once the engine cools down, the crankshaft is set to the top dead center with the first piston being on the compression stroke. Then the crankshaft pulley is carefully removed. All accessories that come in the way of the mechanic and the timing belt are removed. Camshafts are locked and the position of camshaft timings are marked. After removing the idler pulleys and belt tensioner, the timing belt is carefully removed.

Installing a new timing belt is basically the same process in reverse. The mechanic ensures that after the installation, the camshaft and the crankshaft are in perfect alignment. Then the engine crankshaft is turned two full rotations by hand, and the timings marks on camshaft and crankshaft are confirmed.

Your final bill may seem slightly heavier if a broken timing belt has damaged other parts of the engine such as valves, piston, or water pump.

  • Safety stands to support the car
  • User’s manual
  • Assorted sockets
  • Rackets
  • WD 40
  • Wire brush
  • Gloves

How To Replace Brake Pads.

  1. Park your vehicle on a flat area and ensure your car is in neutral. Chock the wheels that you are not working on to minimize movement. You will then need to loosen your vehicles wheel nuts first. You can choose to loosen the front or the rear wheels. Once you loosen the wheel nuts, you will be able to jack your vehicle up. Ensure that the jack is placed on the right point on your vehicle’s chassis. You can refer to your user’s manual for clarity.
  2. Place the safety stands under the vehicle. You can then remove the wheels after the car is well mounted on the safety stands. The brake caliper would then be visible after you pull out the wheel. You can use the wire brush to remove any dirt on the caliper before applying the WD-40. This will assist in making the removal of the bolts to be fast and efficient.
  3. Inspect the caliper to see the amount of pressure exerted by the hydraulic fluid on the pads. You may unbolt the nuts holding it down. Pull the caliper out and hang it on the wheel well.
  4. Check how the brake pad is installed on the vehicle. The pads have clips which hold them on to the brake assembly. You can now remove the worn out brake pads with ease. Inspect the brake pads for wear and warpage. If the rotor is worn out, you can resurface it or replace it.
  5. You can now install the new brake pads. Ensure they fit in the same position as the old ones. Apply anti-seizure lubricant on the metal contacts to prevent squeaking. The oil should not touch on the brake pads, and it would reduce the braking effect.
  6. Inspect the brake fluid level and ensure its at the right level. You can now replace your caliper on to the wheel assembly. Tighten the bolts holding the caliper using the appropriate socket and ratchet. Place the wheel back on and tighten the wheel nuts using your hands.
  7. Lower the vehicle then tighten the nuts in a zigzag pattern. You can now start your car to test the new brakes. Pump the brakes severally to ensure they seat well in their position. You may then top up your fluid level and perform a road test.
